The count of a fabric is the number of stitches that fit into one inch. The same pattern stitched on a higher count comes out smaller and finer; on a lower count it comes out bigger and bolder.
The formula
Finished size (inches) = number of stitches ÷ fabric count
A design that is 98 stitches wide is 7 inches wide on 14 ct (98 ÷ 14), 6.1 inches on 16 ct and 5.4 inches on 18 ct. On 28 count linen or evenweave stitched “over two” (each cross covers two threads each way) it comes out the same size as on 14 ct.
Our covers already list the finished size on 14, 16 and 18 ct Aida and on 28 ct linen, so you rarely need to work it out yourself – but here's a calculator for any other fabric:
Which count should I choose?
| Count | Feels like | Strands of floss | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|
| 11 ct | Big squares, very easy to see | 3 | Children, low vision, bold looks |
| 14 ct | The classic | 2 | Beginners and most of our patterns |
| 16 ct | A little finer | 2 | Smaller finished pieces, more detail |
| 18 ct | Fine | 1–2 | Ornaments, miniatures, cards |
| 28 ct linen (over 2) | Soft, elegant | 2 | Heirloom samplers |
How much fabric to buy
Take the finished size and add 3 inches (7.5 cm) on every side – 6 inches to both the width and the height. That leaves room for a hoop while stitching and for mounting in a frame later.
