Cross stitch size calculator
Finished size, fabric to cut, hoop and frame for any pattern and any fabric.
How it works
Finished size = stitches ÷ stitches per inch. On Aida, the count is the number of stitches per inch: 14 count gives 14 stitches per inch. On linen and evenweave you usually stitch over two threads, so halve the count – 28 count over two works like 14 count Aida.
Fabric to cut is the finished size plus spare fabric on every side: about 3 in (7.5 cm) is standard and leaves room for a hoop and for framing. Use 2 in (5 cm) for small pieces and ornaments, and 4 in (10 cm) for big pieces you will stretch or lace for a frame.
Hoop: the calculator suggests the smallest common hoop (4–12 in) that holds the whole design with a little room to spare. If nothing fits, work with a 7–10 in hoop and move it across the fabric, or use a scroll frame.
Frame: the smallest standard frame that leaves at least about 1 in (2.5 cm) of fabric or mat around your design.
Every House of Needelier pattern lists its stitch count and finished sizes on the cover and on its page in the shop. For more on fabric, see what fabric count means and how much fabric you need.
Frequently asked questions
How big will my cross stitch be on 14 count Aida?
Divide the number of stitches by 14. A design 70 stitches wide is 70 ÷ 14 = 5 inches (12.7 cm) wide on 14 count Aida.
How much fabric do I need for a cross stitch?
Take the finished size and add about 3 inches (7.5 cm) on every side – 6 inches (15 cm) in each direction – so there is room for the hoop and for framing.
Is 28 count linen the same size as 14 count Aida?
Yes. On linen and evenweave each cross usually covers two threads, so 28 count stitched over two gives 14 stitches per inch, exactly like 14 count Aida.
What size hoop should I use?
Ideally a hoop that holds the whole design with about an inch to spare all round. For larger designs, use a 7–10 inch hoop and move it as you go, or a scroll frame.
